Familiar to many as the birthplace of The Beatles and the home of Liverpool F.C., Liverpool is now attracting attention as European Capital of Culture 2008. Liverpool’s immense cultural offering was key in gaining the award. The city boasts more listed buildings, theatres, museums and galleries than any UK city outside London.

Culture & Heritage

As the city builds on its growing reputation as European Capital of Culture 2008, Liverpool’s cultural offering is now getting the exposure it deserves.

The jewel in the crown is the amazing Walker. Considered the national gallery of the North, it has an enviable collection of internationally important art and is rich in European Old Masters.

Tate Liverpool in Albert Dock caters for more contemporary tastes, home to the national collection of modern art in the North.

Take a step back in time and discover the city’s colourful history at the Museum of Liverpool Life. From the Grand National to football, the museum reflects the unique character of Liverpool and its contribution to the world.

New to the collection is FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology), which supports and displays film and new media projects.

You’ll be amazed by Liverpool’s extraordinary wealth of museums and art galleries – most of which are free – which merely scratch the surface of the city’s rich artistic and creative culture.

The city also boasts some of the most impressive architecture in Europe. From the Greco Roman splendour of St George's Hall to the two imposing cathedrals, the city is blessed with fine buildings representing its significant past and exciting future.

Maritime

Liverpool’s port in the 18th century saw massive expansion. As London tackled the ‘Black Plague’ and the Great Fire, the country needed a new port of discharge for cargoes. Liverpool was the obvious choice, especially with its proximity to the Americas.

Today the Albert Dock is one of the UK’s top tourist attractions, featuring museums, galleries, shops, bars and restaurants. Don’t miss one of Britain’s most impressive maritime attractions, the Merseyside Maritime Museum. Reflecting the importance of Liverpool as a gateway to the world, displays include European emigration to America, World War II, slave trade and the story of the Titanic.

Also located within the bonded warehouse of the Merseyside Maritime Museum is the H M Customs and Excise National Museum, which tells the story of smuggling and contraband. The museum holds the national collection of the Department of Customs and Excise, one of the most important collections of its type held anywhere in the world.

Take a ferry  “’cross the Mersey” to the Wirral for the Historic Warship Museum, which features the largest collection of 20th century warships in the UK, including a Battle of the Atlantic U-boat, raised after 48 years on the seabed.

Sport

Liverpool’s sporting arenas provide some of the most exciting venues in the world – be there to see the horse first past the post at the Grand National or the experience the passion and pride a Premiership football match. These venues are famous around the world and offer a unique visitor experience.

Anfield and Goodison Park, the homes of the city’s two Premiership football teams – Liverpool F.C. and Everton F.C. - are arguably the most celebrated of the city’s rich sporting heritage. Liverpool F.C.‘s Anfield Stadium welcomes fans from around the world to its visitor centre and museum and stadium tour. Across nearby Stanley Park lies Goodison Park, Everton’s famous ground where you can also take a stadium tour.

The thrills and spills of the Grand National, the world’s most famous steeplechase, focus on Aintree Racecourse every year. Experience what it’s like to ride a winner at the Grand National by taking a virtual ride round the hair-raising course that has earned its own special place in sporting history.

Liverpool is the city at the centre of a golfing hotspot. Home to 7 Championship venues, England’s Golf Coast has another 160 courses within an hour’s drive and is home to the Golf Open in both 2006 (at Royal Liverpool) and 2008 (at Royal Birkdale).

The dramatic rise in the popularity of Rugby's Super League is due in no small measure to the success and excitement surrounding teams from St. Helens and Widnes, just a few miles away from Liverpool.

Coast

Liverpool city centre has an awe-inspiring range of museums, theatres and galleries and a broad range of attractions. However, for something more green and tranquil you can find a wealth of coastline, countryside and parkland throughout Merseyside.

Merseyside’s enviable waterfront spans over 120km of attractive coastline that stretches from Southport to Wirral which features a significant amount of dedicated nature conservation land.

If you take a famous ferry across the River Mersey to Wirral you will find a shining example of town centre green-space. Birkenhead Park, created between 1843 and 1847, was the world’s first public park and the model for many other projects, including Central Park in New York.

Large areas of the eastern side of the Wirral peninsula, which borders on the River Dee, are dedicated to the Wirral Country Park. Here lie numerous areas of special scientific interest and some of the most picturesque countryside in the whole of England’s North West.

One of the finest views offered of the River Dee estuary is from the village of West Kirby in Wirral, where you can watch Atlantic Grey Seals bask on the sandbanks off the beautiful Hilbre Islands.

Music

Think of Liverpool and you think of The Beatles. Memphis aside, no other city in the world can claim reference merely by mention of one name. Their legacy is etched throughout the city.

For pure Beatles nostalgia head for Mathew St, location of the Cavern Club and possibly the liveliest street in the city. You'll find plenty of Beatles souvenir shops here as well as a whole string of pubs and cafes steeped in popular musical history. A good photo opportunity is the Wall of Fame outside the Cavern Pub, erected to acknowledge Liverpool as the Capital of Pop.

Tune into the swinging sixties with a tour around The Beatles Story, complete with yellow submarine, or take a two hour Magical Mystery Tour, which visits Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields and the houses where the band members grew up.

Those wanting to get closer to their idols should take a National Trust tour to Forthlin Road and Mendips, the former homes of Paul Mccartney and John Lennon.

Beatlemania is enthusiastically celebrated during the annual Beatles Week at the end of August, when the city is filled with fans from all over the world.

Shopping

When fashion bible Tatler re-branded the city ‘Livercool’ they were simply stating what everybody knew –Liverpool does style, and it does it better than anyone else!

Vivienne Westwood recently opened a store to add to the ranks of boutiques that have set up shop in the trendy Cavern Walks. A favourite with Sophie Dahl, the trendy precinct has shops galore selling the latest couture from Milan, Paris and New York.

Further on down Mathew St are two of Liverpool’s fashion institutions, Wade Smith and Reiss. At Wade Smith, one of the most successful of all Liverpool’s designer stores, you’ll find footballers, pop idols and soap stars all looking for the latest Gucci and Prada. Selling its own products, the Reiss clothing range is so cool you may even need to buy a jumper in summer.

Onto Bold Street, and after you’ve spent your money in Karen Millen, Monsoon  and Kookai , you will once again find voguish emporiums.

Halfway up Bold Street you will find the shop known as the Harrods of Liverpool. Jeff’s of Bold Street stocks clothes from top designers including Medici and Joseph Ribkoff.
